Revolutionizing the field of microbiome therapy.
Our triple bottom lines: impactful solutions, improving lives, and delivering values.
Melius is latin for “better”, therefore our name, Melius MicroBiomics translates to “better bacteria” which encompasses what we do here at MMB. Our GEMM™ (Genetically Engineering Microbial Medicine) can lead the way in microbiome-based medicine to improve health outcomes and quality of life for humans and animals.

Solution
GEMM™
Melius MicroBiomics holds patents for the technologies used to create BioPersist™ and BioColonize™, which consist of genetic platforms that equip bacteria to be more effective in a diseased gut. Unlike traditional probiotics that falter during inflammation, our genetically modified bacteria thrive in inflamed intestines, offering superior efficacy in chronic diseases.
GEMM™ are a new class of innovative microbial therapeutics with a wide array of applications. GEMMs are created by inserting our genetic platform technology into the DNA of any beneficial bacterial species to help combat an array of diseases involving chronic inflammation. BioPersist and BioColonize are our first two GEMMs developed, which have been studied in preclinical models.

Preclinical Research
GEMMs Showing Promising Results
Our GEMM have undergone over 10 years of R&D led by Melius' CSO, Dr. Deanna Gibson. BioPersist was initially developed as an alternative treatment for Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). Not only was BioPersist shown to be safe and effective in rodent and pig colitis models, but it also demonstrated superior efficacy over 5-ASA, the frontline IBD therapy.
In a pig model, BioPersist prevented mortality, improved average daily weight gain, and reduced leaky gut, which prompted our exploration of BioPersist's application as a solution to post-weaning stress in pigs, which will enhance the pig farming industry.
GEMM is an intricate and novel approach to microbiome-based therapy that uses the natural healing properties of beneficial bacteria, with the addition of genetic materials that enhances their ability to survive & improve gut health.

Problem
Poor Solutions for Poor Gut Health
Current treatments for gut inflammation and dysbiosis are costly and not always effective, leading to a high unmet demand for alternative solutions. With the future of medicine being fundamentally reshaped by our increasing understanding of the role of the gut microbiome in chronic disease, live biotherapeutics and probiotics have gained traction as a potential therapeutic, yet they have failed to deliver on their promise.

Our GEMM Applications
Tailoring Microbial Solutions for Health
We integrate cutting-edge genetic modification with a deep understanding of microbial ecosystems to develop treatments that are not only effective but can be uniquely tailored to different microbiomes.
